The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework is a global agreement aimed at protecting the world's biodiversity. It is a framework agreement that was established in response to the alarming rate at which the world's biodiversity is being lost. The framework was developed by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and was adopted in 2021.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework is a roadmap for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The framework has three main objectives: to protect ecosystems, species, and genetic diversity; to enhance the benefits that biodiversity provides to people; and to promote the sustainable use of biodiversity.

The framework is based on four main targets that are intended to help achieve these objectives. The first target is to ensure that by 2030, at least 30% of the world's land and sea areas are conserved and effectively managed through a network of protected areas. The second target is to reduce the rate of extinction of all species by at least 50% and to manage the extinction risk of known threatened species. The third target is to ensure that by 2030, all people are aware of the values of biodiversity and the steps they can take to conserve and use it sustainably. The fourth target is to increase the benefits that people derive from biodiversity and ecosystem services, with a focus on the most vulnerable.

To achieve these targets, the framework sets out a number of actions that need to be taken. These include measures to strengthen governance and promote the participation of indigenous peoples and local communities in biodiversity conservation and sustainable use. The framework also calls for increased funding for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, and for the development of new and innovative financing mechanisms.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework is an important step forward in the protection of the world's biodiversity. It recognises that biodiversity is essential for human well-being and for the health of our planet. By setting out clear targets and actions, the framework provides a roadmap for countries and other stakeholders to work together to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity for the benefit of present and future generations. It is hoped that the framework will help to ensure that the world's biodiversity is protected and conserved for many years to come.
